Human milk matters to critically ill and premature infants

You can make a real difference in the lives of critically ill and premature infants by donating your extra breastmilk.

While breastmilk is perfect nutrition for healthy full-term babies, it does not provide enough nutrition for premature and critically ill infants. These infants may need additional calories and protein, in addition to breastmilk, to support their growth and development.

Your breastmilk helps us provide hospitals with the world’s first and only nutritional fortifiers made exclusively from donor breastmilk, instead of cow milk. Our fortifiers are changing the standard of care for premature infants globally. Premature infants receiving a 100% human milk-based diet including Prolacta’s fortifiers had fewer complications1,2,3,4,5 and went home sooner.6

Donor experiences

Breastmilk donors have an opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of babies and their families. Many of our donors tell us that their experience donating gives them a real sense of purpose. Plus, we work to ensure you have all the resources and information needed to make the process of donating without leaving your home as rewarding as possible.

Donor Sarah

"I’m a former teacher and current stay-at-home mom. My husband and I have a 6-month-old baby girl and a Dachshund mix. I enjoy running, and I try to squeeze in various crafts, training my dog, cooking for fun, and home “fix-it” projects while my daughter naps.

Our daughter, Sedona, was unexpectedly born with a type of ichthyosis, a rare genetic skin condition requiring her to spend her first 4 weeks of life in a level-4 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

During this time, I learned about Prolacta and their important preterm nutritional products. Once Sedona was discharged, I was honored to become a milk donor; the most rewarding part of donation is knowing that my milk is going where it’s most needed.

The compensation has enabled me to stay at home longer with Sedona and helped us pay off some of her medical bills. I plan to use future “milk money” to put my dog through a therapy dog training and certification program. My goal is to volunteer at children’s hospitals with him to delight and help hospitalized children of all ages!

Due to the sense of community fostered by the Tiny Treasures Milk Bank staff and Facebook group, my goal is to pump and donate milk for at least 2 more years, or as long as my body will let me."

"I'm an inpatient psych nurse and a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner student. I have three kids - ages 8, 3, and 1. I love to read and am obsessed with my Erin Condren® life planner, stickers, and pretty pens.

While my three children were full-term babies, prematurity has touched my heart in multiple ways. I was only 3 lb 14 oz at birth. My cousin was born at 27 weeks.

I am also a former NICU nurse. I know how important liquid gold is! This is my third time exclusively pumping with an oversupply. One of my friends who is a phlebotomist recommended that I look into the Tiny Treasures Milk Bank.

When I started this journey, I wanted to meet a goal of sending in 10 donation coolers. I had no idea what to expect. I'm now waiting on coolers #23 and #24 to arrive and have no intention of stopping anytime soon! Sometimes I get ambitious and think of setting a 2-year donation goal.

This is my last baby, and my only Prolacta journey, so I feel like I should go big! The most rewarding part of being a donor is knowing that I'm making a difference in the lives of others! The compensation has allowed my significant other to stay at home with the kids, and we’re able to put them in activities like piano, swim, and gymnastics. I am so incredibly thankful for Tiny Treasures Milk Bank."

"I was born and raised in Georgia. I’ve been happily married for 6 years and together we have three beautiful children - ages 5, 3, and 1. I work as a pediatric home care nurse. I am interested in homesteading and our family raises chickens and has a big garden.

After our second baby, I found out that I overproduced breastmilk and wanted to do something with it that made a difference. I found Prolacta and thought their mission was wonderful. It’s awesome to know that I can help micropreemies!

I donated my excess breastmilk for a year and half. I became pregnant again and am back for my second journey donating to Tiny Treasures.

The most rewarding part of donating is knowing that babies are being fed because of my milk. The compensation for donating my breastmilk has truly been a blessing. It has allowed me to cut back on the number of days I work. It’s nice knowing I can help support and provide for my family, even if I don’t leave the house."
