Adam Lewandowski Wins the First Ruth A. Lawrence Investigator Award for Research in Human Milk Science

PASADENA, Calif., Aug. 3, 2017 – The International Conference on Human Milk Science and Innovation (ICHMSI) is pleased to announce that Dr. Adam Lewandowski is the recipient of the first Ruth A. Lawrence Investigator Award for Research in Human Milk Science, to be presented annually.
 

Lewandowski was one of 12 award applicants whose applications were reviewed and scored by an independent panel of expert judges, and was selected for his research, titled: “Breast Milk Consumption in Preterm Neonates and Cardiac Shape in Adulthood.” The research focuses on whether a human breast milk diet – as compared to an infant formula diet – for premature babies has positive outcomes on long-term heart structure and function in adulthood.
 

The award was established in 2016 in honor of Ruth A. Lawrence, M.D., a pioneer in the field of human lactation and breast milk, to encourage original research in the area of human milk science and breastfeeding medicine, and to support the advancement of emerging researchers in this vital area of science.
 

Lewandowski will accept the award and present his research at the 5th Annual International Conference on Human Milk Science and Innovation in Pasadena, Calif., on September 6-8, 2017. He will also receive $10,000, plus travel expenses to attend the event.
 

Lewandowski is a Junior Research Fellow in Systems Physiology at St. Peter’s College at the University of Oxford, UK, and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in RDM Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford, UK. He is a recipient of numerous academic awards, has written and published nearly 30 original research articles, several reviews and editorials, and has presented at national and international conferences. Most recently, Lewandowski received the University of Oxford Award for Excellence for his contributions to research projects within the Radcliffe Department of Medicine. He received his PhD in Cardiovascular Medicine from the University of Oxford, UK, and a BSc in Biological and Biomedical Sciences from the University of Guelph in Canada.

About the Ruth A. Lawrence Investigator Award for Research in Human Milk Science

To be considered for the award, students, post-graduate trainees/residents/fellows or physician/academic researchers within the first five years of completing postgraduate training, submitted original research on topics including, but not limited to:

  1. biologic activities of human milk or its components,
  2. applications of human milk or its derivatives to clinical medicine, and/or
  3. the impact of environment on breast milk production, lactation or breast milk content.


The award was created by ICHMSI to pay tribute to Dr. Ruth A. Lawrence. She received her M.D. from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry at a time when few women pursued degrees in medical education. Lawrence is a founder of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM) and founder and first editor-in-chief of the ABM official journal, Breastfeeding Medicine. She helped establish the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital, and served as the distinguished professor of Neonatology, Obstetrics, and Gynecology at the University of Rochester Medical Center School of Medicine and Dentistry and medical director of the Breastfeeding and Human Lactation Study Center.
