National Nurses Week: Celebrating nurse Rebecca

Nurse Rebecca.png

I have known Rebecca for nearly 20 years in the capacity of a staff nurse in the NICU at a tertiary center in the Dallas –Ft. Worth area. Rebecca is an expert nurse who embodies the role and professionalism of a neonatal nurse. She has participated in several leadership opportunities at her hospital, within her health system and on a national level, currently serving on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN). I have witnessed her care and concern for her tiny patients and their parents over the years. The families she cares for, as well as her co-workers, love and respect her, and she serves as an example of an exemplary nurse within the unit. Rebecca is a parent champion and, through her work, has a passion for supporting parents through the trauma of having a baby in the NICU. Out of this passion for parents, Rebecca has developed Families Bridge to Caring Hands ™, a program to support mothers and families hospitalized in the high-risk antepartum units. She is currently working to increase the awareness of her program so that perinatal centers can encompass antepartum parental support mechanisms in their parental psychosocial support programs. She has self-funded her program thus far, and it has gone through IRB approval and is being implemented and evaluated in two sites in Texas and Oklahoma. This extraordinary program will have such a positive impact on these families as they prepare for their NICU journey. I cannot think of a more worthy NICU nurse to be recognized for her work and passion for NICU families. - Suzanne Staebler
