Programme Overview:

Prematurity continues to be a leading cause of neonatal mortality in the US. Preventing bronchopulmonary dysplasia in very low birth weight (VLBW) babies is critical to long term prognosis.  The series of certified episodes discusses the role of lung microbiomes, inflammation, nutrition, weight gain, and human milk as they relate to development and/or the prevention of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in very low birth weight (VLBW) babies.

Learning Objectives:

By participating in this unit, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the relationship between modifiable factors and risk for developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD)
  • Explain the evidence for exclusive human milk (EHM) feeding in premature neonates and its role in complications of prematurity
