Whether you’re flying out of state for business or making your way through Disneyland with the entire family, be sure to research special accommodations for nursing moms before reaching the airports and attractions, to help ease some of the stress inherent in preparing for travel.
A quick internet search for “breastfeeding friendly airports” offers nearly endless links to articles, airport locators, and mobile phone apps to help a mom on-the-go find the lactation locations. One may even find a travel and moving planning service dedicated to nursing moms, which offers custom moving plans and travel itineraries!
MomAbroad.com offers an “Airport Nursing Rooms Locator”, which lists airports*, nationwide, that offer special accommodations for nursing and pumping moms.
From L.A.X. to LaGuardia, many airports nationwide offer “Mother’s Rooms”, “Nursing Rooms”, “Lactation Stations,” and “Breastfeeding Pods” where moms can nurse or pump privately and comfortably. Some amusement parks have private and comfortable spaces available specifically for breastfeeding moms.
Nursing or pumping while traveling can be a unique challenge. With this knowledge on hand and tools to help nursing moms, traveling and pumping can go hand in hand. For our current and prospective milk donors, please note that milk expressed while traveling may not be acceptable for donation. If you are a current donor and have any questions about traveling and donation, please contact your Milk Bank Coordinator.
*Although currently, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows for the transportation of breastmilk, you’ll want to check current policy or special restrictions at the time of your travel. Visit www.tsa.gov for more information.
