Randomized trial of human milk cream as a supplement to standard fortification of an exclusive human milk-based diet in ELBW infants
Dear Colleague,
I am pleased to announce the online publication of an article entitled “Randomized Trial of Human Milk Cream as a Supplement to Standard Fortification of an Exclusive Human Milk-Based Diet in Infants 750-1250 g Birth Weight”.
This article, written by Drs. Amy Hair, Cynthia Blanco, and colleagues was published online ahead of print by the Journal of Pediatrics. This article reports the results of a randomized clinical trial that evaluated whether premature infants who received an exclusive human milk-based diet and a human milk-derived cream supplement (Prolact CR™) would have weight gain (g/kg/day) at least as good as infants receiving a standard feeding regimen of a 100% human milk diet which included a human milk-based human milk fortifier (Prolact+ H2MF®).
The hypothesis behind the study was that boosting the caloric content of the baseline milk so that it was equal to at least 20 Cal/oz. should have a beneficial effect on growth. The study results demonstrated that:
- Adding the cream supplement to milk less than 20 Cal/oz. yielded better growth
- Improved growth parameters included both weight velocity and length velocity
- Infants in the cream group showed a trend towards requiring lower amounts of Prolact+8 H2MF® and Prolact+10 H2MF®
