Overview:

Explore the evolution of an exclusive human milk diet (EHMD) in Japan and its role in supporting very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. Join Professor Katsumi Mizuno and Dr. Melinda Elliott as they review the clinical rationale for EHMD, findings from the Mizuno study, and considerations for balancing growth, safety, and equitable access to human milk-based nutrition.

Objectives:

  • Explain the clinical and nutritional challenges that led to the development of EHMD in Japan.
  • Differentiate EHMD from conventional feeding strategies, including the roles of mother’s own milk,
donor human milk, and human milk-derived fortifiers.
  • Interpret the Mizuno study’s findings on weight-gain velocity, time to full enteral feeding, adverse
    events, and preliminary IGF-1 data.
  • Apply the evidence to interdisciplinary decisions about standardized EHMD protocols and their
equitable implementation across neonatal care settings.
